Coleman was raised in the Lancashire town of Blackpool. Coleman attended Arnold School in Blackpool where she was the head girl. She also received straight As on her A-levels. Steven Moffat announced at a Doctor Who press conference on 21 March that Coleman was the replacement for Karen Gillan as the companion of the Doctor since Arthur Darvill left the series, would be playing the role alongside Matt Smith. Moffat selected her because of how well she could work alongside Smith as well as the fact that she spoke faster than him.
