Coleman was born at Blackpool Lancashire. Coleman attended Arnold School Blackpool as head girl. She also scored every A grade for her A level examinations. If Coleman was asked about her Emmerdale role she replied that she regrets having not had an experience like the traditional one at university. On 21 March 2012 Doctor Who producer Steven Moffat announced at a press event that Coleman will be the companion of the Doctor alongside Matt Smith after Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill have left the show. Moffat stated that he picked Coleman for the role of companion due to her ability to work best with Smith. Additionally, Moffat noted that she spoke faster than Smith.
