Coleman was born at Blackpool Lancashire. Coleman attended Arnold School in Blackpool where she was head of the school and scored straight A's in her A-levels. Coleman was nominated for Best Actress from the TV Choice Awards. Steven Moffat, the producer of Doctor Who confirmed in a 21st March press conference in 2012 that Coleman will portray Matt Smith's partner after Karen Gillan left. Moffat picked her for the role due to her ability to work with Smith as well as the fact that she was faster at speaking than Smith.
